The video below is of a young singer, the daughter of a David Wang a musician and former contributor to Toronto's Catholic Register. He is the "manager" of his daughter's career. Mr. Damian Goddard produced and filmed the video and is featuring it on his webpage as part of his Catholic media plan.
This is about the flagrant abuse of a Catholic Church for self-promotion; be it photographs, business ventures or music videos.
This critique is not about Mr. Goddard's efforts to be an influence in the Catholic media and church militant. It is not about Mr. Wang's management or his daughter's talent. Yet it is about their wrong choices. If Mr. Goddard wishes to take on a presence in Catholic media, and starts out by upsetting his supporters who are prepared to invest their time to the cause, it is not wise. IgniteTV will go down in flames. It will have no credibility. He will lose. It is unconscionable that any Catholic would use a Catholic church in this way as part of their "business endeavour." If this is what this is about, then that business is not worthy of success.
This is about what is clearly an inappropriate use of a sacred space and for a secular and business purpose. This is wrong, pure and simple. I have raised my concerns, as have others, in private emails, telephone conversations and other efforts. I am not alone in my disappointment over what is an abuse of a sacred space, no matter how innocently it was done. Mr. Goddard has no excuse, less so, does Mr. Wang, his daughter can be excused, somewhat. I had supported Goddard in his plans at Ignite TV; I can have no further association with Ignite TV as long as this video remains. This blogger has spoken out before about the misuse of our churches for artistic, secular and business purposes.
Blessed Sacrament Parish in Kitchener, Ontario in the Diocese of Hamilton was used for this video. The Pastor which permitted this was wrong to do so. The bishop with no controls over this abuse is even more culpable.
Mr. Wang's organisation of this in a sacred space, a Catholic sanctuary was wrong; he should know better. To allow his daughter to engage in this photo in a Catholic sanctuary is a disgrace. For Mr. Goddard to say that I have a "problem" because I saw this picture below as sexualisation (even though my wife saw it instantly, as well), is pathetic. The fact that he does not see it as such, is of concern.
Brothers David and Damian, you are both wrong, stop it! Fix it!
Miss Wang performing in bare feet in a cocktail dress, in a Catholic sanctuary is wrong. Even if she were wearing moccasins, a tunic and mantilla, it is still wrong. To equate this with the art in the Sistine Chapel is to debase the argument.
Mr. Goddard's production of this in a Catholic sanctuary is wrong; he needs to remove this from YouTube and any association with it.
Private emails, telephone discussions and other outreach has failed to impress the error of this production in the sacred space. Intervention by others who feel the same has also failed. Public discussion on Facebook has not made an impression. There is no other choice than this.
Sometimes it is with deep regret that I blog, sometimes it is absolutely necessary; this is one of those times.

Tell me Damian, how is this situation above, different from that pictured, below? After all, were they not both "business endeavours?"
12 And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money changers, and the chairs of them that sold doves: 13 And he saith to them: It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but you have made it a den of thieves.
